Stork's Nest Spring 2011 Baby Shower

Stork's Nest is an incentive program to increase the numbers of youth and women seeking the early and continuing prenatal care so essential if a baby is to be born healthy. The Nest is a distribution center where expectant mothers, referred by cooperating medical personnel, can get needed maternity and infant clothing at no cost.
The first Stork's Nest Project was launched in Atlanta, Ga., in 1971. It was one of many educational and service projects of Better Infant Birth (BIB), a highly successful program sponsored by the Fulton-DeKalb-Clayton Chapter of the National Foundation of the March of Dimes, which actually enlisted the services of 12 member organizations including Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Stork's Nest has since become a national project of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., in cooperation with the National Foundation of the March of Dimes.

What is the purpose of Stork's Nest?

To provide clothing and nursery items for expectant mothers who use tax -supported community health services: To serve as an incentive for expectant mothers to participate in an informal educational program, and to contribute to the physical and emotional well-being of the mothers, fathers and children.

How does the Stork's Nest operate?

Expectant mothers who are receiving prenatal care in health care facilities will be patient-customers. Customers must be referred by a social worker, nurse, physician, midwife, counselor, volunteer, etc., from a cooperating prenatal care facility and must present a Stork's Nest Referral Form, which is non-transferable. The person completing the referral must indicate, by checking the appropriate space on the form, whether the customer needs a standard packet or if specific items are needed. Referrals will be processed weekly on Saturdays. Emergency referrals should be called in and will be processed immediately on a case-by-case basis. The Stork's Nest staff will contact the referral source and/ or customer to arrange for pickup and/or delivery.

What is the layette incentive program?

Very often, pregnant teenagers and low-income women do not have the means to purchase layettes for their infants or maternity clothes for themselves. When this factor is combined with the fact that these high risks mothers-to-be are also less likely to obtain prenatal care, the sponsoring of a layette incentive program becomes a very meaningful activity.
